Ultrabook another competitor enters the fray with the arrival of the Toshiba Portege Z835. Following the steps S3 Acer, Asus and Lenovo U300 Zenbook, this system aims to provide Windows users with a clear alternative to the popular Apple MacBook Air.

Although it is not so skillfully formed a MacBook Air, Z835 is incredibly lightweight and offers additional features such as USB 3.0 and HDMI, the Apple laptop missing. Even the battery life was excellent, Lenovo U300s the player the best Windows-based ultra-Book Battery score so far. However, the keyboard is surprisingly small and difficult to use, particularly demanding in terms of space - can not be deal breaker, but you'll want to get some 'practice time to try it before committing.

Even if we were rightly skeptical of the whole concept of ultra-Book from the date of actual hardware, we have seen and reviewed all is pretty good. So far, R835 takes the cake, at least on paper, has the right combination of price and features, but the keyboard of the good-sense ceases to be a clear winner of the class.

Toshiba Laptops tend to be a little on the thicker. Our favorite recent years, the Portege R835 (a sister of the latter) is better for a reasonably svelte 13-inch notebook with an optical drive, but not exactly thin. The new Z835, however, is a completely different animal, and is very thin and very light - is even lighter than other recent Ultrabooks (not that a few pounds makes a big difference at this level).

The appearance is very similar to the popular R835, with a brushed metal lid and a slight taper towards the front. The R835 was feeling a little inconsistent, which was excusable because it was a good job overall. The Z835 has a similar feel and shiny plastic tape hinges look cheap, as do the buttons touchpad equivalent plastic, while the lid has a huge amount of flex when pressed. The system always has an overall look upscale, but if the Z835 has plans to compete not only with the MacBook Air, but also high-end ultra manuals Asus and Lenovo, it will not win with them, shopping mainly on aesthetics.

The keyboard does nothing to correct the cheap feel it is the laptop is the single most frustrating. The letter keys are razed to the top and bottom ends more rectangular than square, and with a smaller area. The space bar is incredibly small, and often failed to register even though it may be a function of my particular writing style - you may have better luck. All keys are also particularly shallow, which increases the feeling uncomfortable. On the positive side, the keyboard is backlit, so it's not all bad news.

Taking a different approach to all other Ultrabooks mimic Apple's design without a keyboard, click the button, the Portege Z835 has a more traditional touch screen with a smaller area and separate left and right buttons. It is largely a matter of taste, such as pills more, click the Lenovo Acer, Asus, and Ultrabooks average at best (especially when compared with the industry first Apple touchpad). The small pad on this system was soft to the touch and the biggest problem we had was that the mouse buttons were made of cheap plastic and shiny. We appreciate, however, that the touchpad has a hand-off right above, in case you have a mouse connected and do not want to accidentally hit the touch screen surface.

Z835's display has the same resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels native and most 11-inch to 15 inch laptops. That's great, especially for a sub-$ 1000 laptop, but some of the other thin 13-inch models offer more - the Asus example Zenbook 1600 x 900 pixels. Toshiba screen was bright and clear, but colors are not as vibrant as the more expensive MacBook Air. Its bright surface light reflections collected near but outside the horizontal axis view was good. The glasses were small screen on the left and right, but there are plenty of empty space above and below the screen. The speakers, among them the fire of the nose, was strong, without distortion, but like almost all the speakers in laptops of this size, it lacked the bottom.
