When patients go to consult doctors, they often ask a same question: “Do I need to still take drugs after my blood fat level returns to normal?” Some advertisements announce that they can treat hypertension and high cholesterol completely and patients do not have to eat drugs anymore. Is it correct?

It is necessary to keep normal level of blood fat, because it participates in the life process of normal metabolism and it is the essential element of life. However, the higher content of blood fat will cause fatty liver, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease; the low content of blood fat could affect the normal physiological function of human body. In fact, scientists have not found a kind of drug which can control blood fat in normal level in short time and treat it completely. After years of research, they invent some drugs to prevent abnormal blood fat level. However, these drugs should be taken for long time.

Studies show that statin drugs could prevent the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis for patients of abnormal fat metabolism and make the complete treatment of coronary heart disease possible. There is no doubt that it is a good thing for high blood fat patients. High blood fat is the important factor to lead to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. The mortality rate rises by 2% as the cholesterol level increases by 1%. One research found that when people find their relatives or friends or themselves have hyperlipidaemia, they often choose to avoid oily foods and fat intake, and only one third of patients are willing to accept the advice of doctors to eat drugs. Although the diet treatment is important, it is also necessary to take drugs since hyperlipidaemia is a kind of disease.

Now, the hospitals often regard the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) as the key standard to judge the treatment effect. The risk of forming atherosclerotic will increase if the cholesterol contents except high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are higher. Therefore, HDL-C is often called good cholesterol while LDL-C is often called bad cholesterol. Statin drugs not only reduce bad cholesterol, but also increase good cholesterol. And it could protect the vascular endothelium and prevent anti-vascular inflammation.

Overall, patients with abnormal lipid metabolism should have rational use of drugs under the guidance of doctors. Do not stop taking drugs casually; otherwise the function will come to naught.
