Since Rick Perry entered into the GOP presidential race he has achieved the status of being a front runner as he has went right to the top of national polls. The position of that both Michele Bachman and Mitt Romney held briefly June to early August now belongs to Rick Perry. He was the host of an evangelical Christian revival/prayer which seems to indicate that he would seem to be a strong candidate among those who have a considerable amount of power in many early primary states, namely the religious conservatives. In addition, he is doing well at the poll by the republicans who regularly attend church.

Some of Rick Perry's biggest supporters are the religious conservatives in Texas. He recently met with some evangelical leaders of televangelist James Robinson at their headquarters in Fort Worth. Man of his evangelical supporters, including Hispanic and African American pastors took part in The Response. He also took a break from campaigning to visit with some evangelical heavyweights that included Rick Scarborough, an evangelist, and David Barton, a Christian historian at the ranch of Jim Leininger, a longtime financial backer of the efforts to ban marriage between gays and a Rick Perry donor Fredericksburg, Texas.

However, he should consider bringing in a few religious leaders from outside of his home state. Although Texas has a tradition of being very involved with evangelical religion, it is also an insular cultural and political environment. The religious conservatives who are behind the success of Rick Perry are a somewhat extreme, small group. He has been victorious in three gubernatorial elections primarily by securing the nomination in the state's GOP primary. This is a contest which attracts approximately 4 percent of Texas' population that are old enough to vote. That is a relatively small group of Republican voters that have some priorities that are rather unusual.

For example, there is Rick Perry's zealous support of state rights and the 10th Amendment. The liberal critics make fun of Rick Perry's jokes about the secession of Texas. However, to national social conservatives, this isn't something to joke about. Their agenda has dual objectives to ban gay marriage and abortion in the entire country. When he signed a pledge against abortion, the activists who are against abortion began to ask themselves if he would consider restricting abortion by using federal power.

The social conservatives had good reason to question Rick Perry's commitment to their agenda when New York passed legislation to permit gay marriage there. He told a group in Aspen, Colorado that that's New York and that is their business which was fine with him. This was Rick Perry's initial response was completely in line with his orientation that is anti federalist.
